Just What the Patient Ordered:
A Guide to Navigating a Hospital Stay
A hospital visit, whether planned in advance or entered through the emergency room, can be an overwhelming experience.
An emergency room experience three years ago fueled James Whitfield’s
desire to develop a step-by-step hospital guide with the patient and
the patient’s family in mind. Whitfield’s mother Kathya almost died
when her heart stopped beating and she suffered anoxia—a lack of oxygen
to the brain. She remembers almost nothing about her ordeal, but
Whitfield took detailed notes on everything from the ER experience to
the hospital stay right through discharge. This year, through a
partnership with the Washington Health Foundation’s Healthiest State
Campaign, those notes became the backbone of “Just What the Patient
Ordered” — a guide to navigating a hospital stay.
